MOVIE REVIEW
'Road House' (2024) Is A Fun Movie That Doesn't Surpass The Original
By Dan Dubon | March 28, 2024
The Road House remake is the type of movie where Jake Gyllenhaal beats up a group of guys and then drives them to the hospital after you know.. because he’s not that bad of a guy. The original Road House movie is a cult classic for many people however when it was announced that Jake Gyllenhaal was taking on the Dalton role from Patrick Swayze I was instantly on board.
Director Doug Liman is hit or miss. When he slaps, he slaps hard like Dalton does here. However when he misses, he also misses really badly *cough (Locked Down and Chaos Walking) cough*. However I think directing wise this is another win for him. (Aside from an atrocious CGI filled third act.)
The cast is also good. Gyllenhaal is great as always, Billy Magnusson gets to chew scenes as a villain, Daniela Melchior was also good as Dalton’s love interest, and Conor McGregor certainly gave a performance in this. Whether it was good or bad I’m not quite sure.
This movie removed some of the classic things the original was known for. Like absurd lines like “I used to fuck guys like you in prison.” There’s also no throat ripping here. Some people might have mixed feelings on that but I don’t think stuff like that would work here and I’m glad Liman just really tried to do his own thing with this. This ends in a way where there are enough loose ends that Amazon could do a sequel if they wanted to (it really depends on how many people watch this thing.)
Could we have the start of a Road House streaming franchise on our hands? One thing is for certain though if Amazon does greenlight a sequel director Doug Liman definitely won’t be returning after publicly blasting Amazon for not giving this a theatrical release.
I don’t know what genre this is officially called but I’m a really big fan of the “Mysterious guy goes to a place, kicks ass and causes problems” genre.
