MOVIE REVIEW
'Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3' Is The Perfect Conclusion To This Trilogy
By Sal LoCicero | May 9, 2023
The month of August 2014 feels like it was here just a few weeks ago and ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’; a movie about a team of unknown space characters who protect the Galaxy from danger, hit theaters and had people mourn over the death of a tree. Nine years later, Writer-director James Gunn delivers an emotional farewell to the Guardians as the team prepares for one last adventure.
Marvel Studios has been lacking in quality for a few years now. Phase Four presented some of the most disappointing entries in the MCU, and recently, Phase Five went through a rough start, with ‘Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania’. After being re-hired by Disney, James Gunn continued writing the script for the third and final Guardians movie in the trilogy. Having all of the creative freedom that a filmmaker could want when making a marvel movie, Gunn was able to put his entire vision up on screen, and it worked.
‘Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3’ is easily the best Marvel movie since ‘Avengers; Endgame’ (2019). It is packed with so much action, humor, and emotion that never falls flat, and at 2 hrs and 30 minutes there is not one moment that drags out the story. Even though the main focus is on Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper), Gunn perfectly balances out the characters to make for a compelling ending for each of them. Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) is still broken over the loss of Gamora, while Drax (Dave Bautista), Mantis (Pom Klementieff), Nebula (Karen Gillian), and Groot (Vin Diesel) all continue to keep “Guardians Of The Galaxy Headquarters” safe and running for the people who live there. However, Rocket Raccoon is suffering from the trauma that he endured at a young age, which has now come back to get him.
Since James Gunn received all creative control, this sequel is different compared to the first two - in tone and style. He is not afraid to show off his most outlandish ideas that increase the entertainment . The comedy is often hilarious and sometimes brilliantly bizarre. The chemistry between the Guardians’ members continues to work - thanks to the writing. The character development that has grown through the previous movies, is shown even more.
The performances are spot on. Chris Pratt captures the brokenness of Peter Quill and he can really play with your heartstrings along with Bradley Cooper as Rocket Raccoon, who plays a pivotal role throughout the story. Karen Gillian shows off the rare side of Nebula; a character who has been depicted as angry and vengeful since the first movie. The High Evolutionary (Chukwudi Iwuji) may be the most cruel villain in the trilogy. His motives are to turn everything into perfection and his way of doing that is truly evil.
The action sequences are spectacular, especially in one particular fight scene involving immersive camerawork, impressive special effects, and amazing music. These movies have always carried a lot of emotion within its story and characters and the emotional elements that play in this are even heavier. This is as much of a heartbreaking finale as it is heartwarming. There will be scenes that are to make you tear up and, by the end, there will not be a single dry eye in the theater.
‘Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3’ is a perfect conclusion that should leave fans overwhelmingly satisfied.
